Dr. Ruey-Kang R. Chang Awarded Prestigious NIH Grant to Study Hearing Loss and SIDS - 05/17/2010
Dr. Ruey-Kang R. Chang is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and the Division Chief of Pediatric Cardiology at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. His research focuses on public health issues related to infants and children with heart disease. Recently, Dr. Chang was featured in a Daily Breeze article for receiving a $1 million NIH grant. Dr. Chang was among a select group of LA Biomed researchers awarded a total of $4.5 million in grant funds from the National Institutes of Health as part of the 2009 federal stimulus program (ARRA). This grant was a highly competitive "challenge" grant, one that must focus on rare conditions or scientific knowledge gaps. Roughly three percent of the applications for these grants were awarded.

LA BioMed to Receive $9.7 Million Stimulus Grant for New Research Center - 04/21/2010
LA BioMed will receive $9.7 million in federal stimulus funds for the construction of a new Chronic Disease Clinical Research Center on campus. As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), biomedical research institutes were encouraged to submit applications for grants funding totaling $1 billion to support new construction and facilities renovation.
There was incredibly stiff competition for the facilities grants, and it is a credit to the investigators, administration staff and architects involved that LA BioMed was able to secure a share of this one-time infusion of capital funding. Although NIH facilities grants typically require matching institutional funds, this requirement was waived for this round of funding.
The grant comes from the NIH’s National Center for Research Resources and calls for rapid deployment of shovel-ready projects, a requirement aimed at ensuring the grant creates jobs and stimulates the economy.
Terence (Terry) Doherty joins the LA BioMed Team as the Director for Interdisciplinary Research - 04/19/2010
On March 1, Terence (Terry) Doherty joined the LA BioMed staff as the Director for Interdisciplinary Research within the President’s Office. He has been given the monumental task of altering LA BioMed’s research funding landscape. His charge is to increase the grant portfolio of LA BioMed, especially from federal sources.
Terry is a veteran of Harbor-UCLA, having worked in the cath lab under Bill French in the 1990’s. During much of this period, he worked on various research projects as well, including some of the pioneering investigations on using heart scans to detect coronary calcification. For the past decade, Terry served at Cedars-Sinai, first in a basic cardiology research lab, and then as a grant writer and promoter of collaborative research. The significant increases in NIH funding achieved by Cedars-Sinai in the past five years are in large part due to Terry’s efforts. We are looking forward to his having the same effect at LA BioMed.

Two new papers for Dr. Tetteh, PL-2 - 04/02/2010
Two papers have recently been published or in press, co-authored by Dr. Beatrice Tetteh, PL-2.
The first (Lutfiyya et al) was a cross-sectional analysis of diabetes care in rural versus urban environments. The study, published in the October 2009 issue of the journal Primary Health Care Research & Development, found that diabetes care was more likely to be inadequate in patients living in rural areas (OR 1.205). Risk factors included being under 40 years of age, male gender, Caucasian race, not a high school graduate, not partnered, without health insurance, inactive or without an identified health care provider, and that diabetes care in rural areas was more affected by patients deferring routine care appointments for cost issues. This study may have important implications for the role of health care reform in improving diabetes care, and shows the need for outreach into rural parts of the country.
The second paper (Ezra et al), currently in press for the American Journal of Medical Genetics (part A). The paper is a case report of a patient with spinal cord compression due to hereditary multiple exostoses.
Dr. Jennifer Yee receives Liu Young Investigator Award, Weitzman Award - 02/26/2010
Dr. Jennifer Yee (Faculty, Div. of Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism) has been named the recipient of the 2010 Liu Young Investigator Award and the 2010 Weitzman Award.
These awards are given annually to an outstanding young investigator at the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA. Dr. Yee completed her pediatric endocrinology fellowship training here at Harbor-UCLA and became a faculty member in 2007. Her main research interest is in the mechanisms of the development of obesity. She is currently using stable isotope techniques to study the fatty acid metabolic pathways in a rat model of prenatal nutritional programming of adult obesity. In parallel, she is also studying the plasma fatty acid composition of infants exposed to in utero nutritional imbalance. The goal of these projects is to evaluate fatty acid pathways as potential targets for obesity prevention. Dr. Yee is also studying the timing of development of cardiovascular disease in young adults with Type 2 Diabetes.
Congratulations!
