As we have for the past 26 years, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center will again host high school students from the Los Angeles Pediatric Society Medical Careers Program for the month of July. This year we have accepted four students, who are from Torrance High School, Redondo Union High School, Lennox Academy, and Gardena High School.
The goal of the program is to expose the students to the
health professions and to stimulate them to continue their education.
The inaugural Heiner lecture took place on Thursday, May 22 and was by all accounts a great success. Dr. Sami Bahna, M.D., Dr.Ph., once at Harbor and now at LSU School of Medicine, spoke on Unusual Food Hypersensitivity Reactions.
The lectureship, made possible by Dr. Charles Song, M.D., (Div. of Allergy and Immunology) will take place twice a year. The lectureship honors Dr. Douglas Heiner, M.D., Ph.D., past Chief of the Division of Immunology and Allergy at Harbor-UCLA.

On May 29, 2008, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center hosted its first “Foster Care Awareness Day.” The purpose of the day was to raise awareness about the needs of children in foster care, and the current activities at Harbor-UCLA to address some of these needs. The sponsoring groups from Harbor included the Kids in the Dependency System (K.I.D.S.) Clinic, a new clinic that specifically assesses the healthcare needs for foster children, and the Child Crisis Center, which has been providing care for suspected victims of child abuse for over 20 years. Other participants included Child Life from Harbor-UCLA, Children’s Institute Inc. (who provides mental health services for foster children and collaborates with Harbor), TIES for Adoption, United Friends of Children, and representatives from the Department of Children and Family Services including the Heart Gallery and Foster Parent Recruitment
The day was a success with plenty of lively discussions, raffles, information about foster children, activities for Harbor UCLA staff and visitors and FUN!
April 20, 2008, Dr. Jo Chung (PL-3) and Dr. Julie Noble (Div. of General and Emergency Peds) manned the SIDS booth at the First Annual Kalaea Jennings Memorial Tournament. The event raised an estimated $18,500 for First Candle (www.firstcandle.org), a non-profit organization that advances research and awareness in infant mortality. Dr. Lynne Smith (Div. of Neonatology) is also involved with First Candle to work towards uniform standards for autopsy diagnosis of SIDS. Please contact her if you would like to help. Per Dr. Smith, "in LA, SIDS is a rare autopsy diagnosis (they prefer to use, “cause undetermined” which is not included in the SIDS statistics). Seems like a great advocacy project…"
