UCLA Students Donate to Child Life - 07/25/2015

UCLA Students made a generous donation to Harbor-UCLA Pediatrics Child Life Services program and presented our grateful Child Life specialists with a giant check to show their support.

The students raised the cash through various campus events including a penny war as well as a dance social with ticket proceeds going towards Child Life Services.

Nina Viaz, one of the students present for the donation, said that it was a no-brainer to choose Harbor Pediatrics.
“A lot of us have rotated through here as medical students,” she said. “I rotated here in August through the pediatrics program. The care that the patients get here is so fantastic, but since the resources of Child Life is based solely on donations, we were more than glad to make the contribution.”

The Child Life Services Program offers resources and opportunities for pediatric patients to create a sense of normalcy and minimize the stress associated with medical illnesses and procedures.

Happy Hats for the 4th of July - 07/03/2015

An ordinary Thursday morning turned into a quick reminder that the Fourth of July is right around the corner. Sheri Schrier and her team returned to Harbor Pediatrics with their Happy Hats. She was joined by City of Torrance mayor Patrick Furey. They came, this time, with hand-made hats of red, white and blue. Expect happy hats to sit atop 250 heads this weekend. That's the number of hats the non profit organization brought with them to pass out. The hats came in many different styles including the classic hat, french chapeau style, the court jester, mad hatter, and more.

After the loss of her younger brother, father, mother and grandmother to cancer, Sheri Schrier founded Happy Hats for Kids in Hospitals with her husband, aiming to put smiles on the faces of hospitalized children to ease their pain so they won't have to experience the emotional trauma that devastated her.

During one hospital room visit this afternoon, a teen, who has cancer and sports a crop top hair style, put the hat on and her mother wept tears of joy as her daughter dawned a hat and beamed a bright smile.

Starlight Features Harbor Pediatrics in Promo Video - 06/23/2015

Starlight Children's Foundation had a camera crew on hand recently in our Child Life playroom, clinics and hospital rooms filming a few of our telegenic pediatric patients. It was all for a promotional video to be released at a later date which will promote a few new upcoming devices produced by Starlight media.

Starlight media has been a partner with Harbor Pediatric's Child Life for decades. One of our biggest supporters, they've donated many times over to the child life services cause of keeping kids smiling and as happy as they can be during their stay with us at the hospital. Among their contributions to Harbor Pediatrics are our Starlight Fun Center Mobile Entertainment Units which help normalize kids during their hospital visits.

LA County Approves Planning for Biotech Company on Harbor-UCLA Campus - 04/30/2015

Already home to LA Biomed, there are plans underway for an additional biotech company on the campus of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. The proposed plan would have the new 15 acre biotech company sit adjacent to LA Biomed. With nearly 250,000 square-feet of space, the private-public partnership would create up to 900 jobs. The private aspect of the partnership would foot the bill of $110 and $125 million for developing the biotech company campus.

"This will lay the groundwork to begin making Los Angeles a hub of biotech innovation," said Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, who authored the motion that was approved. "Now the county can begin to achieve its full potential as a leader in this industry, support new discoveries made by local researchers and attract bioscience companies to our region."

In addition to the campus, the Board of Supervisors has directed the Community Development Commission to establish a task force to carry out recommendations based on the Battelle study to create bioscience hubs throughout the County.

Disney Donates Videos and Toys to Child Life - 04/22/2015

Disney Worldwide Services, Inc. has served and continues to support Harbor-UCLA Pediatrics Child Life with a yearly Disney Hospital Care Package with items worth over $5,000. In the package are Toys, DVDs, activity books, and reading books.

The DVDs are used in our ED and Clinic waiting rooms. And when patients are in isolation or unable to walk, they can watch their choice of Disney movies. Harbor Pediatrics is extremely grateful for their support.

The Child Life Services Program offers resources and opportunities for pediatric patients to create a sense of normalcy and minimize the stress associated with medical illnesses and procedures.

The program organizes special events for hospitalized children such as birthday celebrations, end of chemotherapy treatment acknowledgements, graduations, bedside activities, and activities for inpatient/outpatient playrooms. In addition, the program provides patients with sibling support items, bereavement and legacy items, educational materials and holiday gifts.
