Nathan Kuppermann, M.D., UC Davis In September, resident alumnus and former Chief Resident Dr. Nathan Kuppermann received the "Outstanding Contribution in Research Award" from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). The award recognizes a physician who has made a significant contribution to emergency medicine research. Dr. Kuppermann was given the only research-related honor this year.

Kuppermann was part of a select group of doctors honored at the 2011 ACEP Scientific Assembly. The conference recently took place in San Francisco and is the biggest annual gathering of emergency physicians in the U.S.

Kuppermann is the Bo Tomas Brofeldt Endowed Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the UC Davis School of Medicine and a professor of emergency medicine and pediatrics. He is a nationally recognized pediatric emergency physician and clinical epidemiologist. He has been a federally funded investigator for many years and has authored nearly 100 research papers. Kuppermann's research has focused on the evaluation and treatment of infectious emergencies in children, the laboratory and radiographic evaluation of pediatric trauma patients, and pediatric diabetic ketoacidosis and the risk of cerebral injury and cerebral edema.

In addition to being elected to the prestigious Institute of Medicine in 2010, Kuppermann served as Chair of the Steering Committee of the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) from 2001 to 2008. Through PECARN and other collaborations, he established a nationwide network of pediatric emergency departments that perform research to improve the care of critically ill and injured children. This year he traveled to Argentina and Uruguay to help establish similar networks in those regions. Kuppermann also chairs AAP's Pediatric Emergency Medicine Collaborative Research Committee.

Congratulations to Dr. Kuppermann on yet another impressive achievement.
