Dr. Julie Noble, Professor of Pediatrics, has developed a "mini medical school" in cooperation with Meyler Street Elementary School in Torrance. The "mini medical school" program began last year when Dr. Noble was asked to establish a teaching curriculum for fourth and fifth grade high-achieving students.
The program was designed to introduce children to medical science and hopefully peak their interest in future careers in medicine. With participation from the Harbor-UCLA pediatric residents doing the advocacy rotation, Dr. Noble created an 18 unit curriculum. Noble and the resident physicians meet with the students every two weeks to review the anatomy, the physiology and the medical implications of a specific organ system. Both the residents and students are enthusiastic about the program, which is a fun, growing part of the school curriculum.
