Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship

Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) is the distinct knowledgebase and skill set focused on the provision of high quality general pediatric care in the inpatient setting. PHM is a site-specific pediatric specialty emerging from the field of general pediatrics, similar to the previous evolutions of pediatric critical care and pediatric emergency medicine from general pediatrics during previous decades.

The PHM fellowship training program at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is a non-ACGME fellowship and accepted its first fellow in July 2010. The program is one to three years in duration, depending upon experience and career plan. The objective of the program is to train candidates for careers in pediatric hospital medicine in academics or community practice. Approximately half of the training period is focused upon the development of clinical expertise in the care of pediatric inpatients. Clinical training is centered on general pediatric inpatient service at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, a 20-bed inpatient ward, an 8-bed step-down unit, and the Level I newborn nursery service. In addition, fellows will learn to provide effective and safe procedural sedation for pediatric patients throughout the medical center while rotating through the pediatric procedural sedation team.

The remaining time is dedicated to developing the skills necessary to succeed in one of three training pathways: (1) academic PHM investigator, which focuses upon a balance between clinical training and health services research; (2) academic PHM educator, which focuses upon a balance between clinical training and education, and (3) PHM community practice, which focuses upon a balance between clinical training, quality improvement, and administration.

Each year of the program is divided equally between clinical training and pathway focus areas. Our curriculum is based upon the PHM core competencies. Fellows have the opportunity to participate in formal clinical research training programs offered at UCLA and at the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute.

Start dates for PHM fellows are July 1st or August 1st each year. Candidates must be BC/BE in pediatrics by the beginning of the fellowship. We are unable to accept applications from non-US citizens or those who are training in the US on visas. Applications are accepted July 1 - October 15 each year and interviews will be held in November and December. Selection is based upon performance during residency training, letters of recommendation, and a commitment to developing expertise in the PHM pathway of interest. Initial offers will be made on December 15 (or first business day following), with rolling acceptances after that date if slots remain available.

To apply, please send the following information:

  • a current CV
  • a brief (less than a page) statement focusing on your interest in pediatric hospital medicine training at Harbor-UCLA and any potential scholarly interests
  • three letters of reference, with one of those preferably from your residency program director
