Advocacy

Child advocacy is a fundamental part of Harbor-UCLA’s mission as a county hospital. We serve a diverse community of patients, predominantly of low socioeconomic status and with poor access to health care. Children, who have little control over their lives and no ability to speak on behalf of their own interests, are particularly vulnerable.

As a pediatric tertiary care and trauma center, with a dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department, Harbor-UCLA plays a vital role in the community, ensuring that all children will have access to the highest quality medical care, regardless of social condition. The faculty and residents of the Department of Pediatrics are committed to this mission, as well as to advocating for the needs and interests of children in the community, state, and nation.

Help a teen be Cinderella for a Day | February 8, 2010

From Nancy McGrath

Hi all. I volunteer with Working Wardrobes, an organization that empowers men, women, and young adults in life crises to confidently enter the workforce with career development and wardrobe services. Each year they sponsor a day for deserving high school girls in need of formal wear for their prom, called "Cinderella for a Day". I'm collecting old dresses (long and short, all sizes), purses, shoes, and accessories (jewelry, wraps). They're especially in need of size 12 and above! Please ask your friends, daughters, sisters and moms to check the far reaches of their closets as I'm sure there's an old bridesmaid or prom dress hiding back there! I'm happy to collect everything for drop off at WW. The deadline is Wednesday, February 24th so they'll have time to clean and repair things as needed.

We can all remember how much fun we had at our high school proms, so let's try and make it a memorable day for these young ladies! My daughter and I have volunteered at this event for 10 years and are so moved by the joy on these young faces! Please call or email me with any questions!

Thanks so much!
Nancy McGrath
