Research Interests:
My main research focus is towards translating basic science and clinical studies towards disease prevention in the ICU setting. In the lab, I focus on the pathogenesis of Gram negative organisms, particularly multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii, a problematic organism because of its resistance patterns and predilection for ICU patients with multiple medical issues and prolonged stays. I utilize an in vitro model with Type II Pneumocytes (A549 cells) to evaluate attachment, invasion, and damage during infection with this organism. Our immunocompromised diabetic and neutropenic murine models of pneumonia and bacteremia allow us to manipulate the process in vivo including evaluation of novel treatment regimens. On the clinical side, I am conducting studies of how to improve infection prevention practices in the ICU setting. Specifically, this involves an evaluation of how providing personal bioburden information to healthcare providers may impact their subsequent adherence to hand hygiene and use of personal protective equipment. As well, I study the environmental bioburden in the ICU setting also meant to influence healthcare provider behavior. I also run our clinical HIV program and the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program in the hospital.
